Sossusvlei, Namibia

Sossusvlei
Sossusvlei, a salt and clay pan in Namib-Naukluft National Park in southern Namibia, sits at the heart of the Namib Sand Sea and is framed by towering orange-red dunes including Dune 45 and the higher Big Daddy, with the bleached clay pan Deadvlei nearby. The site is part of the UNESCO-listed Namib Sand Sea and illustrates wind-formed dune systems, rare desert-adapted plants and animals, and occasional floods from the Tsauchab River that create ephemeral marshes. Access is from the Sesriem park gate along a roughly 60-kilometre route, with the final sandy stretch requiring 4x4 vehicles, and visitors commonly climb dunes at dawn or walk across the pans to view the stark landscapes.
